Black Passage pull back “The Veil” on their boundaryless post-everything metal with a video for a song of the same name.

The offering is the title track of the band’s debut LP, which dropped last July. It begins high in the atmosphere, calling to mind the likes of Deftones and The Contortionist’s more recent material, before plummeting to brutal depths for a second. They right their plane’s course triumphantly and masterfully. The conclusion takes musical cues from the opening skyward, opening the vocals and instruments for a much more driving energy.

The song leaves you wanting more from the band, which features members of Fallujah and Wolf King. It feels like it reaches cruising altitude just when you’re along for the ride. The crushing middle section is the kind of moment that launched Jinjer’s “Pisces” to reaction video virality. Given that the song now has a video, they just might gain the same treatment. It would deserve it!

The video leaves the focus on the song, with haunting shots juxtaposed by performances in both a dimly lit and a white room, depending on the mood. Guitarist Robby Perry explains the song and accompanying clip.

“‘The Veil’ is one of the songs that came to be earlier in the writing process of the album. The song is a representation of darkness that can consume a person at any given moment. It seeks to portray a feeling and moment of despair. The video is really fixed to two main points: art and performance. We preferred to use a fairly basic approach for the video, yet to execute effectively. There is a feeling within the band that this song is a good presentation of the group as a whole, which is why we decided on making it the title track of our debut album.”
